Female Runner of the Year

Jessica Manier

Jessica participated in 18 circuit races this year and is #1 in the age 25-29 standings. Jessica improved tremendously over her 2005 performances and set six PRs in 2006. She won her age group in six events and even was the 1st overall female in one event (Saybrook).

Kim Guttschow

Kim had an outstanding year setting PRs from the 5K to the Marathon. Her Las Vegas marathon in December was a 12 minute PR.

Her best 5K this year was the Tremont 5K at 22:43, a big PR. She ran 11 circuit races and is 1st in the 35-39 circuit standings. I don't know what her 5K PR was before this year, but I have the impression that she took minutes off of it because I think she used to finish behind Meg (25-26 minutes).

Carol Pratt

Carol leads her age division and she is a strong runner.

Julie Howell

Julie completed 15 circuit races and PR'd in every distance she ran this year, from the 5K all the way up to her culminating 3:50:18 at the Chicago Marathon.

Leann Steidinger

Leann is an all-round athlete who has shown steady improvement in her times. She ran her first marathon this year in Tulsa with an impressive 4:14:16 time. When she wasn't busy running, she co-directed the Park 2 Park race with Julie Howell. Leann's a sweet person with a great personality and a natural ability to run.

Saori Hanaki

She just did a 5k and 19:15 now if that doesn't impress... she has now finished 10 states and has only been doing marathons since 2004

Male Runner of the Year [top]

Curt Lowry

Not because he took lots of minutes off his 5k time, but because he's so much fun to run with. Last year, he set a goal of running the Chicago Marathon with his daughter, Heather. A first marathon for both. He put together his training schedule and stuck to it. He always has a smile on his face and a positive attitude about the training runs and some really awful jokes. He ran Chicago in less-than-perfect conditions and came out smiling. He's already planning for a return appearance next year because he thinks he can do better. One of this year’s goal is the 50-miler at McNaughton Park!

Curt also co-race directed the Dawson Lake 5K and took care of the food and refreshments for the Lake Run which is a HUGE job.

Merlin Anderson

ABC Runs, Volunteer Activities, Marathon Training program. He is the best runner and he puts a lot of time in for the LRC.

Patrick Dunagan

This long-term LRC member is well-known for many things, primarily his bad jokes and ability to remember lyrics to every song on the juke box. However, most inspirational to me is the fact that, although you'll rarely see his name among race age-group awards, he has shown an impressive ability to set and meet very serious running goals. In 2006, this Southern gentleman hit three major milestones, a few of which most other runners - fast or not so fast - may not reach:
* He competed in his 16th consecutive River to River relay, having run each of the eight possible legs twice;
* He completed a long-term, multi-year goal of running a minimum of three miles in each of our 50 states when he ran in Alaska during the 2006 summer solstice;
* He ran or walked 1,001 miles during 2006 - as a lifelong over-achiever, he felt it necessary to include one additional mile over his goal of 1,000 miles just in case his math was challenged later

Like many runners, he has taken on these challenges knowing they wouldn't be easy - and that they would take a great deal more time and effort than initially considered. But he believed in himself and his ability to accomplish what he set out to do - and he did it!!!

This runner is known for being a "back of the packer" starting nearly every race or casual running event "DFL" - you'll have to join him if you haven't already....as well as volunteering in a number of different capacities - emceeing the Lake Run awards ceremonies, announcing at the Kid's Run, and being "stage master" for a number of consecutive LRC awards banquets.

He is also co-founder of a few of the club's less serious running events - the Saturday Before Christmas Run and the Lawn Chair Challenge; and he absolutely, positively will NEVER miss Chilly Chili, the Tom-o-Hawk marathon, the Lake Run, or any of the Danville races if he can help it. He's also a past CTW volunteer. He's positive, supportive, funny, and one heck of a nice guy.

Tim Rood

Mike Heffron

Mike for the great year he had in placing among the top few in most events and even winning a few races outright.

Kirby Cheek

Kirby has improved a lot this year. I was on his River to river team and he ran the hardest leg with all the hills. It would put anyone to shame he was so good!!! He is very much part of the Lake Run Club and has kept very involved in the running of it volunteering

Best New Runner - Female [top]

Janet Connolly

She is a good runner with room to improve.

Best New Runner - Male [top]

Robbie Garrett

He's lost about 70 lbs. since joining CTW last year. He's running well and getting faster.

George R Brown, Jr.

George ran 24 races in 2006, 14 in the LRC circuit and 10 non circuit races 8 of which were 8 different state marathons. He finished 3rd in his age division 45-49, and volunteered at different events for the LRC.

Todd McCartney

Todd is a new runner who started running in November of 2005 to lose weight. By St. Pat's 5K in March, Todd had lost 35 pounds and ran an outstanding 21:11 for his first 5K. By the St. Jude in September, Todd's PR improved impressively to 19:01. Todd ran 10 circuit races this year and finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group standings. Todd got his volunteering in by helping with the finish line at the Deer Run Run. Todd looks forward to making much more improvement in 2007 when he plans to adopt better training techniques.

Most Improved Runner - Female [top]

Jessica Manier

Jessica participated in 18 circuit races this year and is #1 in the age 25-29 standings. Jessica improved tremendously over her 2005 performances and set six PRs in 2006. She won her age group in six events and even was the 1st overall female in one event (Saybrook).

Cathie Haab

Cathie has literally taken minutes off her running pace since she began running in 2005. She's putting in more miles and improving all the time. She has a great sense of humor and is fun to be around.

Kim Guttschow

Kim had an outstanding year setting PRs from the 5K to the Marathon. Her Las Vegas marathon in December was a 12 minute PR. Her best 5K this year is Tremont 5K at 22:43, a big PR. She ran 11 circuit races and is 1st in the 35-39 circuit standings. 11 circuit races and even doing marathons while doing this... did Grandma's Marathon this year Her time is coming down a lot.

I don't know what her 5K PR was before this year, but I have the impression that she took minutes off of it because I think she used to finish behind Meg (25-26 minutes).

Donna Creditor

Donna completed a number of marathons and she has done well in the Lake Run Club circuit.

Julie Howell

Julie completed 15 circuit races and PR'd in every distance she ran this year, from the 5K all the way up to her culminating 3:50:18 at the Chicago Marathon.

Leanne Steidinger

I believe she had a PR in a half marathon in Chicago. Plus she did a marathon a few months later and did very well. She placed third in circuit points in her 25-29 age group and did 11 circuit races.

Stephanie Roberts

Stephanie placed third in her 30-34 age group with 7 races. She made improvements all year long. She ran the Lake Run Loop (4.37) last year at a 9:08 pace and she went for the Lake course (12K) this year and did it at an incredible 8:59 pace! Not to mention how great she looks! She's had a great year.

Jana Kiefer

She had PRs this year for her 5K, 10K, and marathon. That's definitely an improvement!

Most Improved Runner - Male [top]

Fred Martin

Fred has done a great job running this year and he has volunteered at two of the LRC races.

Curt Lowry

Not because he took lots of minutes off his 5k time, but because he's so much fun to run with. Last year, one of his goals was to run the Chicago Marathon—his first marathon. He ran it in less-than-perfect conditions and came out smiling. He's already planning for a return appearance next year because he thinks he can do better. In addition, he’s training to run the 50 mile trail run at McNaughton in April.

He always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude and some really awful jokes. He’s supportive of other runners and is someone you can always depend on.

Jeff Simpson

Jeff ran his fastest marathon ever at Indy when he shaved more than 15 minutes off his previous PR. He also set a PR at the Mahomet half marathon and won his age group at the Flanagan 5K in the pouring rain. Jeff ran 14 Circuit races, two marathons, and others races not on the Circuit.

Larry Heitz

Larry has lowered his 5k into the 19 minute range and also pr'd in marathon.

Kevin McCarthy

16 races (only one other male did that this year Bruce Sutter) But check out Kevin's times... where did he get all that speed?

Volunteer of the Year [top]

Tim & Stacie Rood

Not only did they manage the Kid's Run, but at my request, they stepped in and took over as Race Directors for the 25th Anniversary Lake Run. These events ran nearly simultaneously. And Stacie was pregnant with their second child. Heck, we should nominate them for sainthood!

Jana Kiefer

LRC leadership, volunteer activities

Merlin Anderson

On the volunteer committee, finish line coordinator for several races, coordinator of ABC runs, tremendous cheerleader for all runners, marathon training coordinator.

Jeff Simpson

Jeff has done a tremendous job for us keeping track of volunteer points. He is on the volunteer committee and his main responsibility is keeping track of the volunteer points. As most of you already know, he has been simply bombarded with e-mails from gads of people asking to be awarded points for their various activities. Jeff has done a wonderful job awarding points this past year. He also graciously offered up his back yard for the volunteer party.

Paul Martin (2 nominations)

He was injured this year, but still showed up at most of the races to help out. I don't know what the club would do without his database expertise. He's made the administration of the club very easy.

Paul does a ton of volunteering that often goes unnoticed. Besides all of the work he does on the website, the numerous finish lines he helps at and showing up at times at the Kid's Run he also coordinates the registration at the Lake Run which is a big job! Paul does all of this out of service to a club he truly enjoys being part of. Many volunteers these days want to know "how many points I get" or “do I get a t-shirt" Paul says "what do you need me to do?" or better yet “hey I have an idea to make this better". This club and all clubs need more volunteers like Paul!

Kathy Alexander

Kathy took over the TNAM, the Lake Run Club accumulative marathon that you do over 8 weeks.

Race Performance of the Year [top]

Tim Rood

He ran the 2006 Chicago Marathon in 3:19, a PR by 6+ minutes! This time qualifies him to run in the 2008 Boston Marathon. He accomplished this while coordinating the Kids Run for Fun program, keeping up with a 1 1/2 year old and welcoming a new baby in August. Balancing all of that and getting the training in is a feat in and of itself, but setting a PR and qualifying for Boston - that is a Performance worth recognizing!!!

Jeff Simpson

He set a marathon personal record at Indy by shaving more than 15 minutes off his previous marathon PR.

Kent Lowry

For his performance at the Monterey Half-marathon. This was Kent's 1st half marathon and he finished with a 2:08:19 time, which is very respectable.

Julie Howell

Julie did a great job in the Chicago Marathon and being the race director for the Park to Park race for the LRC circuit.

Saori Hanaki

Saori ran some excellent times, starting with breaking 20 minutes for the first time at the St. Pats 5K. Perhaps that could be a Race Performance award.

Judy Oltman

Judy ran Pikes Peak!!!! She lost a lot of weight and she ran 11 circuit runs... All while working too many hours and on too little sleep!!!

Trevor Arbogast

Trevor took roughly 1:45 off his 5K PR during the Jingle Bell Run in November of 2006. His time was 22:37.

Nigel Keen

Powerman Alabama. Nigel ran a 32:03 8K, then followed that up with a 32:20 8K after racing 53K on the bike. In his first run, he was second in his age group, and in his second run he was first in his age group. Consistent speed (two 8Ks 17 seconds apart) in the same race!!

Comeback of the Year [top]

Kathy Alexander

She ran 18 races this year!!! I'm not sure how many she ran last year, but this year she did a bunch!

Sherry Detloff

Sherry has battled back from injuries and she is doing a good job running and helping with the articles in the Lake Runner.

Kevin McCarthy

Kevin had an excellent 2006 racing season posting some of his best times in many years. He has always been a strong performer, but this year everything seemed to click for him. Congratulations, Kevin!!

Nelson Newsletter Award [top]

Dave Hurst

Dave wrote a total of eight "Over the Edge" articles during the year. I heard from many people how much they enjoyed reading his stuff.
