Female Runner of the Year

Female Runner of the Year

Julie Howell

She PR'd twice in 5Ks this year, taking 6 seconds off with a 22:46 in Hopedale, and then lowered it again with a 22:31 at Town 'n Gown 5K.

She PR'd by almost 3 minutes at the Lake Run, hitting her goal of 7:45 pace!

She PR'd at the Mahomet 1/2 marathon by 9 seconds with a 1:45:40 run in the heat and humidity.

Her best performances may have been in the Delaware marathon in May where she PR'd in by 46 seconds to run a 3:49:32, and then dropped her PR by over 9 minutes to a Boston-qualifying 3:40:11 in West Virginia, satisfying a goal she has had for years.

To satisfy some kind of numerical compulsion, she completed her 30th marathon this year at the 30th anniversary of Chicago in the same year she turned 30. Now that took some planning!
She also completed a 1/2 Ironman triathlon and thinks the cross-training really helped her running.

Connie Reeser-Hall

Connie ran in only 4 circuit races in 2007, but she also ran 4 half marathons, and the Park Forest Scenic 10 miler, as well as many ABC runs.  Of course, her volunteerism is a big part of her running life - she's on the Volunteer Committee and she helps the newsletter team by searching thru all the race pictures and suggesting ones for the newsletter.  She has a GREAT attitude and work ethic - if you ask her to do something you know you can count on her to get it done - correctly and on time.  Her motto might very well be "no whining"!

I don't know exactly how much her pace has improved since she first started running, but I do know that initially she couldn't talk while running.  We had to be satisfied with head nods and shakes because it was all she could do to BREATHE!  I would guess that her "comfort zone" training pace has dropped about 2 minutes - from maybe 13 minute miles to 11 minute miles.

Connie truly enjoys running, and not just for the significant health benefits she's reaped.  She also enjoys being a part of the Lake Run Club and dearly loves all her running friends!  :-)

Deb Lowell

Deb Lowell had a year of improvement.  She ran course PRs on 7 of the 10 courses she had run before. She also earned age group All-American status in the 800 meters, mile, and 10K.

Male Runner of the Year [top]

Mike Heffron

He has dominated the Masters Running division this year, being the top person over the age of 40 in 16 of his 18 races. The only ones he missed were a couple of really big races (Park Forest Scenic 10 mile race which he ran in 56:50 and Canal Connection which he ran in 33:35). A few highlights include 1st Master at the Lake Run, Steamboat, and Shoreline.

He's done pretty well overall also, winning one 5K in St. Louis, finishing 2nd overall in 5 races (including Jingle Bell), and 3rd overall in 5 races (including the Lake Run and the Allerton Park trail run). His 5K and 10K times are "national class" according the age-adjustment tables from the World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA). Several of his times were lower than last year and some were near life-time PRs, which is saying a lot for a guy who has been competing at a high level from high school on.

He has also helped out at a couple of local races. His biggest volunteering has been establishing a Junior High Cross-Country program at El-Paso/Gridley and coaching the runners. His top female runner placed 3rd at State.

Best New Runner - Male [top]

Seth Gieson

This is his first year as an LRC member. Seth really had to train hard to prepare for The Lake Run when he thought it was a 5K. He really had to train hard when he found out the loop was more.  He really enjoyed it, so we joined TNAM and ran the loop and more races many more times.   The Chicago Urbanathlon challenged him to increase his distance.

Cathie Haab

She’s shaved about 3 minutes off her 5K times this year and ran Canal Connection at a faster pace than some of her past 5Ks. Cathie’s running longer distances in all kinds of weather. I see a half marathon in her future!

Deb McNamara

The following stats on Deb's race/running events qualify her for Most Improved Female Runner for 2007.  Following is a list of a few race times over the years that support Deb as most improved female runner:

Race Year/Time Year/Time
St. Patrick's Day 5K 2000/42:37:00 2006/29:31:00
CIDA 5K 2006/42:24:00 2007/42:06:00
Eureka 4 miler 2000/50:29:00 2007/44:00:00
Danvers 5K 2001/34:16:00 2007/28:39:00
Run the Woods 5K 2005/33:59:00 200731:38:00

In addition, Deb has run many 1/2 marathons and delivered a PR for her 1/2 marathon performance in Vegas in December of 2006!

Deb is one of the club's members who consistently helps other runners improve as well.  Following is a list of a few of Deb's influences:

As Catch The Wave Coordinator, Deb inspires and encourages new runners

As a local runner, Deb is consistently on the trail with an encouraging, "Hi, how are you?"

As a LRC member, Deb is an active volunteer at many of our club events cheering for runners

As a Charity Sponsor with the ABC Runs, Deb participates and Deb and spouse bill, coordinate an ABC run out at their home

Deb's running partners can always count on her to log miles with them when training for an event.  Deb's motto, "Just tell me what time and where to show!"

Most Improved Runner - Male [top]

Steve Barr

Ever since he joined "Catch the Wave" in 2006 he has done well in running.  His 5K times have dropped since he did the CTW program. He has run strong in half marathons this past year and recently finished his first marathon.  He is fun and energetic to run with, he is also very motivating to others and makes people around him laugh and have fun all along the courses he runs!  He is always polite and thanks the volunteers for their time as well.

I think he has really improved this past year and should be recognized.

Greg Baumann

Even though Greg had run nine 5K races before this year started, he lowered his 5K PR by an amazing 2:40 to 22:52 at St. Pats.  He also lowered his 8K Deer Run PR by 12:39, his half-marathon PR by 7:24.  He also set a 5 mile PR and he ran his first marathon, surviving the heat of Chicago.

Volunteer of the Year [top]

John Kastigar

John is one of the key people that help the Lake Run Club run smoothly.  John helps out frequently, in many different ways, and in ways that are not always visible.
For example, John was the Software Coordinator for four races (Miller Park 5K, St. Pats 5K, Tremont 5K, and Hopedale 5K).
Talk about behind the scenes -- people see the finish line people but the software people are usually out of sight.  Yet the position of software coordinator is one of the most difficult to fill because so few people have volunteered for this duty.

In addition to software coordinator duties, John also:
-- is a member of the Volunteer Committee
-- was finish line coordinator for Town 'n Gown 5K
-- maintains the listing of Area Races on the LRC Web Site
-- was a CTW coach
-- was a Marathon Training Coach/Assistant
(he also does a great job of recruiting participants)
-- helped with either packet pickup or race registration four times

Bill Hahm

Bill seems to be one of the go-to people for volunteering for the Lake Run Club. When asked to help out, he usually says yes, and then we get an e-mail offering additional help.  He is great to work with and is usually pretty well organized (except for that time we had to put the clock on a table in Tremont, but that was a long time ago).  Bill is one of the first to reply when the call goes out for volunteers to help run finish lines for new races or fill in at established races.

He lets volunteers know what duties they should perform and where they are needed. He’s is good at keeping everyone going.  He is a mainstay at Kids Run and many runs throughout the season plus he is a dedicated runner always with a smile on his face and a story to tell.

He dogs problems for the club until they’re worked out, like when we transitioned to new software and had a few bugs at a finish line.

He offered to make sure all the timing clocks for the club were fit with new batteries and in fine working order.

Rich Beal

He was typically one of the first to reply offer to coordinate when new races came on board needing finish lines.

You can always count on Rich to help out. He ran 5 finish lines last year and is always willing to step up and help out when needed. He’s a supportive CTW leader. I’ve never seen Rich without a smile on his face and a nice comment to make (or kind of nice, in my case).

Merlin Anderson

Merlin may have retired from his job, but I think it was only so he could pick up the pace on his volunteer efforts

Larry lowered his PR in the marathon by over 28 minutes when he ran 3:20:45 at Grand Rapids, qualifying him for Boston.

Comeback of the Year [top]

Peg Stark

Because I believe that being able to come back to running after a Running injury/ Knee Surgery/Arthritis really beats the odds.

Even though it took most of the year with much difficulty, I managed to Run 10 races in the process; I think that when most people think of coming back to Run that it's all about Wining?  But it's not about how fast one can Run, as not all of my races were my best performances, But it was and should be  just being able to Run,  that made the difference for me.

There was one race that I really felt that was my Comeback race, the Canal Connection 10k,  It was the longest distance race that I did in 2007,  sometimes you never know how it's going to turn out...like what did I get myself into? or if the Pain and soreness will come back?  But, nothing like that happened, during that run, I really felt Great!  And then I knew for myself I finally made it back being able to Run.

Even though it took me 1 hour and 7 minutes, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Nelson Newsletter Award [top]

Merlin Anderson

In honor of the MANY articles he's written over the years (including general interest, ABC, and Pages Past articles) plus the support he's shown to the newsletter itself and the editors. For example, he's always early with his articles and information (amen!), and he's prompt getting us pictures or resolving questions we may have. He also readily agreed to our suggestion that he create Pages Past on alternating months, to offset the "void" when we have no secretary's minutes, since the board meets every other month now. He is GREATLY appreciated!!

Malt Beverage Consumption Award [top]

Les Usiak

(What do we need to say? Both great competitors!)
