What is Ride The Wave?

It's a program designed to help intermediate runners prepare for the Lake Run.

Sessions will begin with 15- to 20-minute discussions or demonstrations on topics ranging from running form to proper nutrition.

THEN, we will hit the streets for a run. Experienced runners will accompany participants to provide on-the-run coaching.

Ride the Wave is designed for runners who want to improve their running. If you're a new runner or walker and want to begin running, you may want to do Catch the Wave.

A 10-week session of classes will have you Riding the Wave for the Lake Run before you know it. For either $55 or $70, you will receive:

  • Ten weeks of expert instruction that will have you ready to run the Lake Run.
  • Paid entry into the Lake Run, a Lake Run T-shirt, and access to the friendliest post-race party around.
  • Introduction to various speakers and workouts to improve your performance.
  • A special Ride the Wave racing shirt.
  • Lots of fun and camaraderie with fellow Ride the Wave runners.

Where and When?

Ride the Wave will be held from 5:30 to about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays starting February 17th, 2010 through April 28th, 2010.  The first four classes will meet at the White Oak Community Room in White Oak Park, Bloomington.

Lake Run club members will assist during training runs in nearby neighborhoods of Bloomington/Normal. We'll also run the actual Lake Run route so you can experience that before race day.

Class benefits carry through to race day. Ride the Wave participants can meet ahead of race time for a warm up and stretching and can head to the start line together. Some class members may even choose to run the race together.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Anyone who can already run three miles.
  • Folks who've been away from running for a while.
  • People who run a little, but who'd really like to work up to seven and a half miles.
  • People who want to improve their time at the 7K or 12K Lake Run.
  • People who want to lose weight and get in shape.
  • Families, couples or friends who want to make preparing for the Lake Run a group event.
  • People looking for training partners with similar goals.

How Do I Register?

Just print and complete our paper Registration Form. Registrations will be accepted the first night of at White Oak Community Room in White Oak Park. Participants should feel free to print the training plan on their own.

Remember: your class fee includes registration into the Lake Run (a $20 value) and membership to the Lake Run Club (a $20 value).

What Happens At Class?

The first night, we'll explain how the program works. Come to the first class dressed to jog/run (we'll build up). Wear whatever you feel comfortable exercising in. We will be outside.

We'll meet no matter how cold, hot, humid or wet it is. As long as there is no thunder or lightning, we'll run outside, so dress for it. You'll be surprised how fun it can be to run in the rain!

We'll divide into small groups for weekly runs. You can switch groups, depending upon your progress, but you'll find that getting to know the people in your group is great fun.

Questions?

Can anyone join Ride The Wave?
No. You must be a LRC member to participate in the program. If you are not currently a member, please fill out a LRC membership form in additional to the RTW registration and send it in with your app.

I can already run 4.37 miles. Should I sign up for Ride the Wave?
Yes! Ride the Wave is designed for runners who want to improve their times or increase their running distances.

I'd like to take part, but I am not sure I am healthy enough. What should I do?
Check with your physician first. If you get the go ahead, this program will include tips to maintain exercise in your life and to improve your nutrition.

I can run/walk four and a half miles, but I've never run further than that in my life. Could I get in shape to run the seven and a half mile Lake Run race?
Yes! We will build up our mileage conservatively. If you can run four miles today, you will be able to run seven and a half miles at the Lake Run in May.

Is this an intermediate running program for Olympic runners?
Absolutely NOT! "Intermediate" means in the middle...This program is for ANYONE wanting to improve their times or increase their distance. Our participants have a wide range of abilities.

Where will the sessions occur?
The first three weeks will meet at the White Oak Community Center on Cottage Street in Bloomington. Additional meetings will occur at different locations including Ewing Park on Jersey, the track at Illinois Wesleyan University, and the actual course at Lake Bloomington.
