ABC#129/Multi-Sport Day

ABC#129/Multi-Sport Day on May 20 was a great success with $2,235 donated to Timber Pointe Outdoor Center! Although the weather was terrible and attendance was down to 40 compared with 108 last year, we lucked out by having some larger than usual donations and some donations from those that could not attend. Thanks so much to everyone who attended, donated, organized, brought food, and enhanced the day with your enthusiasm and friendship.

The stormy weather caused a number of adjustments, including two different start times for the run (note the two group photos). The first group left before 8:00, hoping to avoid getting too wet (it was already starting to rain when we took off). The weather forecast was for thunderstorms but we were lucky. Three of us (Gary Savage, Tamara Nelsen, and Merlin Anderson) ran the long course and experienced nothing worse than wind and rain and sleet except for one big clap of thunder near the end that made us hurry to the protection of Sterns Lodge.

When we entered Stearns Lodge, we noticed the small crowd appeared to be in party mode. I know Meg’s coffee cake is good but maybe not that good! Turns out, a contributing factor was that our organizers, Kevin McCarthy and John Pratt, tapped the keg after they made the decision to cancel the swim and the bike ride. Cool – craft beer for brunch! They also made the decision to hold the cookout as scheduled because the weather was clearing by late morning.

So what did Kevin McCarthy say about the change in plans (and tapping the keg early)?

Thank You! This was incredible. In spite of threatening weather, people came to the Multi-Sport Training Day to enjoy friendship and community and to support children with developmental needs. Friends from different clubs, with different affiliations were all in one place to enjoy being together and supporting our community. A truly great day!

Through the wonderful generosity of those that joined us and those that sent in contributions, we raised over $2,200 for Timber Pointe Outdoor Center and Easter Seals. And since we started this fun idea, Multi-Sport Day & ABC Runs have generated over $12,000 dollars for Timber Pointe and Easter Seals.

There are many to thank. The principal organizers are Merlin & Meg Anderson (ABC runs & Lake Run Club), John Pratt (Masters Swimming & Lake Run Club), Colleen Klein (Tri-Shark Triathlon), and yours truly Kevin McCarthy (Tri-Shark Triathlon Club and Lake Run Club). But this is truly a team event with many helpers needed to set up the swim course, set out beverages on the run course, lead bike routes, lead trail runs, man the grill, shop for food, order and deliver supplies, line up lifeguards, supply swim caps, ensure participant safety, etc. We may have canceled the swim and the ride but volunteers were still needed to be ready. Thank you!”

ABC Run #130 to benefit St. Jude will be on Sunday, July 16 at Meryl Brown’s home.

ABC#119/Multi-Sport Day, 5-21-16

Overwhelmed is the word for the day: 106 participants; 20 others donated for shirts even though they could not be there; $3,080 grand total donated to Easter Seals Timber Pointe Outdoor Center! This makes ABC#119/Multi-Sport Day at Timber Pointe on May 21 a huge success! Thanks so much to everyone who attended, donated, organized, brought food, and enhanced the day with your enthusiasm and friendship.

The perfect weather made a great occasion for two special events: (1) wishing Jenny Keen well in her move to Colorado next month, and (2) celebrating passing the $100K mark in total donations over the course of the first 118 ABC runs. This $3,080 gives us a great start on the next $100K. I’m at a bit of a loss for words to describe my appreciation for this outpouring of support you all give for children in this area. With regard to this event, perhaps Kevin McCarthy stated it best in his Facebook message which I will repeat here (with updated numbers in parenthesis).

“Thank You! Today I am overwhelmed. Over 100 people came out to the Multi-Sport Training Day to enjoy friendship and community and to support children with developmental needs. Friends from different clubs, with different affiliations were all in one place to enjoy being together and supporting our community. A truly great day!

Through the wonderful generosity of those that joined us, we raised over $2,800 ($3,080) for Timber Pointe Outdoor Center and Easter Seals. And since we started this fun idea, Multi-Sport Day & ABC Runs have generated over $10,000 dollars for Timber Pointe and Easter Seals.

There are many to thank. The principal organizers are Merlin & Meg Anderson (ABC runs & Lake Run Club – 11 years of ABC!), John Pratt (Masters Swimming & Lake Run Club), Colleen Klein (Tri-mom events, Tri-Shark Triathlon), and yours truly Kevin McCarthy (Tri-Shark Triathlon Club and Lake Run Club). But this is truly a team event with many helping to setup the swim course, set out beverages on the run course, lead bike routes, lead trail runs, man the grill, shop for food, order and deliver supplies, line up lifeguards, supply swim caps, ensure participant safety, etc.

And a special thank you to Often Running and Mike’s Collision Center for sponsoring the ABC Run t-shirts that celebrate and commemorate over $100,000 of donations to local children charities. ABC Runs, the invention of Merlin Anderson, has been operating for 11 years. Each run aims to raise funds for a specific, local, children’s charity. We are thrilled to have Adventures Benefiting Children (ABC) be part of the Multi-Sport Training Day again this year. Thank You!”

ABC Run #120 to benefit St. Jude will be on Sunday, July 24 at 7:30 AM (doors open at 7:00) at Meryl Brown’s home.

Multi-Sport Day and ABC Run #109, 5-16-15

OMG! What luck! No rain; 85 participants; an astounding $3,000 donated to Easter Seals Timber Pointe Outdoor Center. This makes ABC#109/Multi-Sport Day at Timber Pointe on May 16 a huge success, more than doubling the impressive $1,451 donated last year! Thanks a kajillion to everyone who supported this event through your participation, donations, organizing, and providing food and drink. Thanks for organizing goes to Kevin McCarthy, John Pratt, Colleen Klein and others from the LRC, Tri-Sharks, and Masters Swim Team.

Kevin McCarthy started the event with some opening comments and introduced Gina Mandros from Easter Seals who thanked us and told a bit about how Timber Pointe helps kids and their families. Laurel Schumacher then told us about a bridal shower that was hosted on May 15 at the Schumacher home by colleagues and friends of three Metcalf teachers (Rachel Matyasse, Peggy Finnegan, and Cindy Thompson Drew) that are getting married this summer. The brides-to-be requested that there be no gifts but guests could feel free to donate to Timber Pointe!  Their collective donations totaled $500. What a great story!

Another heartwarming story came from an individual that donated $500. Our policy for ABC runs is that all individual donations are anonymous so I will not include the name. I did contact the person to express my sincere thanks. In reply, this person mentioned the efforts of everyone “to put together a fun training event which ultimately helps others enjoy life a little more – well, it deserves support”. This person also said the event “was so good for me mentally & spiritually” and ended with “I thank YOU”.

The swim took place from 9:00 to 10:30 and, luckily, the water was warmer than last year but still cool (65 degrees). The bicycle ride started at about 10:40 with Ted O’Neill leading a group on a ride of about 25 miles, and Kevin McCarthy leading a group on a ride of about 12 miles. Despite the forecast, the rain held off until we got our rides in.

The day concluded with a fantastic cookout. The cookout included brats and chicken breasts.  The cost of food, beverages, life guards and materials was underwritten by the LRC, CIMS & Tri-Sharks. Thanks, everyone, for such a fun time and for all your contributions!

ABC Run #110 to benefit St. Jude will be Sunday, July 19, 7:30 AM (doors open at 7:00) at the home of Julie & Brian Sibley.

ABC Run #97/Multi-Sport Training Day, May 17

Adventures Benefiting Children Run #97/Multi-Sport Training Day was held at the Timber Pointe Outdoor Center on May 17.  A total of 85 generous participants raised an awesome total of $1,451 for the Easter Seals Timber Pointe Outdoor Center.  Thanks so much to everyone who supported this event through your participation, donations, help with organizing, and providing food and drink.  Thanks for organizing goes to Kevin McCarthy, John Pratt, and others from the LRC, Tri-Sharks, and Masters Swim Team.

The theme song for this event could have been the theme song from the movie, Frozen.  The temps at the start had barely crawled into the forties before we started.  The run started a bit later than usual because we gave participants more time to find the location (we met in a different building this year).  After a few words from John Pratt about how important Timber Pointe is to the kids that attend camps and to their parents, Meg Anderson got us organized at about 8:20 for our traditional group photo and we were on our way.  I took the camera and did some interval training trying to get running photos and then I handed the camera off to Meg to get more action shots.  You can find all the photos on the Facebook Multi-Sport page.

The swim took place from 9:00 to 10:00 and the temps (in the forties) that were so great for running were not so great for the swimmers.  Even those wearing wetsuits were frozen (and not singing “the cold never bothered me anyway”).  The bicycle ride started at 10:30 with Mick Hannah leading a group on a ride of about 26 miles, and Kevin McCarthy led a group on a ride of about 13 miles.  Despite the temps which had only climbed to about 50, Richard Verdery wore a sleeveless bicycle jersey.  He might have been singing “the cold never bothered me anyway”, but he was shivering before the start, muttering something about just toughing it out.

The day concluded with a fantastic cookout, complete with a keg.  I don’t know what kind of beer that was but it sure tasted good after running and/or swimming and/or bicycling.  The cookout included brats, burgers, and chicken breasts.  Thanks, everyone, for such a fun time!

ABC Run #98 to benefit the Boys & Girls Club will be on Sunday, June 29 at 7:30 AM (doors open at 7:00) at the Anderson home (112 Doud Dr, Normal).
